Ask the child to read a page out loud and for each word they don’t know, hold up a finger. Have your 2nd grade child use the five-finger test to see if the book is too easy, just right, or too hard. I can usually tell from a glance by the amount of words on the page and their size whether or not it’s going to be around a 2nd grade reading level.
